Traditionally woven from rushes on January 31st (Brigid's Eve/Imbolc) are hung in homes to ward off evil, fire, hunger, and to bless the household. It blends Celtic pagan reverence for the goddess Brigid (sun, fertility, hearth) with Christian tradition, representing peace, the four elements (earth, air, fire, water), and the saint's story of explaining Christianity to a dying pagan chieftain by weaving rushes. "
